Vivianite has earned its eerie nickname because it can actually form on decomposing organic matter—including buried bones! In rare, low‑oxygen, iron‑rich environments like bogs, marshes or graves, the phosphate released from decaying remains can combine with iron and water to create vivianite crystals. When first unearthed, the crystals are pale or colourless, but exposure to light and oxygen causes them to oxidize into deep blue‑green or almost black hues — a transformation that adds to the mineral’s mysterious reputation.
