General Handling Tips
Crystals are natural minerals, and many are more delicate than they look. A few simple habits will protect your collection:
- Handle crystals with clean, dry hands — oils from your skin can dull polished surfaces over time.
- Hold specimens over a soft surface when examining them. A dropped crystal can chip, crack, or shatter.
- Avoid stacking crystals directly on top of each other — harder stones can scratch softer ones.
- Keep crystals away from the edges of shelves where they can be knocked.
Cleaning Your Crystals
Dust is the most common enemy of a beautiful crystal display. Here’s how to clean safely:
Soft brush — A clean, dry paintbrush or makeup brush is ideal for dusting clusters, druzy surfaces, and rough specimens where water could get trapped. This is the safest method for almost all crystals.
Damp cloth — For polished pieces like freeforms, spheres, and tumbled stones, a slightly damp microfibre cloth works beautifully. Dry immediately and thoroughly.
Mild soap and water — For hard, non-porous stones like Quartz, Jasper, and Agate, a gentle wash with mild soap is fine. Rinse well and dry completely before returning to display.
Crystals That Should Never Get Wet
This is important — some crystals will dissolve, rust, or be permanently damaged by water:
- Selenite & Desert Rose — Water soluble. Even humidity can cause surface damage over time.
- Pyrite — Will rust and oxidise when exposed to moisture.
- Malachite (raw) — Toxic when wet; always handle raw Malachite with care.
- Halite — Salt crystal — it will literally dissolve.
- Calcite — Soft and porous; water can cause surface erosion.
- Lepidolite, Mica, Kyanite — Layered or flaky structures that water can damage.
When in doubt, use a dry brush only.
Sun & Light Exposure
Many crystals will fade with prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. Protect these beauties by keeping them out of sunny windowsills:
- Amethyst — Will fade from purple to pale grey or white.
- Rose Quartz — Loses its delicate pink hue.
- Fluorite — Colours can bleach significantly.
- Aquamarine, Citrine, Kunzite — All sun-sensitive.
Indirect natural light or warm artificial light is perfect for displaying these stones while keeping their colour vibrant.
Storage Tips
If you’re storing crystals rather than displaying them:
- Wrap individual pieces in soft cloth, velvet pouches, or tissue paper.
- Store by hardness where possible — keep soft stones (Selenite, Calcite, Fluorite) separate from hard ones (Quartz, Jasper, Obsidian).
- Avoid plastic bags, which can trap moisture and cause condensation.
- A wooden box or fabric-lined tray is ideal.
Display Ideas
Part of the joy of crystals is showing them off. A few ideas for beautiful, safe displays:
- Use crystal stands or ring holders to elevate spheres and eggs.
- Group clusters on a wooden tray or slate tile to protect surfaces.
- Layer different heights and textures for a visually rich altar or shelf display.
- Place a piece of Selenite among your collection — it will continuously cleanse the energy of surrounding stones.
